Day 1

Sundays are always filled with lots of creativity and writing for me. Typically, I work an early morning at the coffee shop before rushing home (I do mean rushing) with like 2 minutes to spare before logging into a writing community called Good News Open Mic which is hosted by the phenomenal Sabrina Benaim. But today, it's my mom's birthday and since everyone is here (Thanks Covid), I had the day off. Which meant that this morning, I was writing poems dedicated to her. Then in the kitchen watching Good News, where I requested that one of the regular musicians/poets/creator dudes do a cover of "Happy" - that song that was like everywhere 5 or 6 years ago. It's one of her favorite songs and I wanted her to feel welcomed and included in a creative community again. She's spent so long utilizing technology and social media resources from a distance that I think it's hard for her to feel included and inspired as we deal with the world around us. The social distancing and the everything.

My mom usually proclaims that the entire month of January is her month. Is for celebrating and being together. But this year she just felt tired and drained so she declared that today was for togetherness and making memories. She and Tyler (her boyfriend) decided to make a custom meal that makes her happy and feel inspired. Tyler likes to cook French food because of his heritage, which I suppose is what led to the highly organized feel of this meal. While they were at the grocery store I was in a Vegas wrimos virtual write in. Where I got 2,000 unexpected words written and the knowledge of this Dreamwidth place and an upcoming yearly writing goal based challenge thing - get your words out. Which heavily interests me, because I always manage to get a lot of new ideas brewing when NaNoWriMo happens, but would love to have momentum and encouragement like that all year long.

Here's a random poem from the Vegas WriMo write in tonight:

There’s something to be said for
mixed up beauty magic. For a half-
dressed flower arrangement waiting
on the kitchen counter patiently -

only to be photographed 5000 times
in a single day and probably 20000
before all the flowers have dried up
and wilted before our very eyes.

Something equally as inspiring as
the wandering sprites in the garden
tended to by the ghosts of what
could have been, might have been

and maybe once was sort of moments.
I’m coming up to you, to this magic
mixed up in a form of beauty that
defies every form of description -

even poetry would not be caught dead
or alive at this mid week party
of mismanaged hope or might have been
anythings, everythings and then somes.

Basically, I don't title these pieces, I just get the words on a page or screen. I've really been enjoying Scrivener and Novlr equally as much as I've been enjoying pen and paper writing. So Scrivener or Novlr count the words for me and I just roll on through the ideas. Then when I'm stumped or working on a new project I come back and pilfer the ideas or semi-completed pieces. I have no idea what a journal entry here is supposed to be like, but I figured a general account of what happened and what inspired my writing and what my writing progress was feels like a pretty good place to start. And including a piece of poetry from the day feels like a nice way to show hey - I actually did something while still showing and developing my voice and style here. I'm not sure how often I'll update here, or what I'll make of these "entries" but I guess we shall see.
